I have a question for everyone as this is something i am curious about. This is something that was brought up at my game last night but not by the other team. But by a ref and i understand why it was brought up but with discussion with my team after the game we were on the other side of this.
I have been on teams in many different divisions as of the lowest in the league as well as the highest. And ive seen this work out good where neither team is up set. But I've found other teams ive been on or played against get extremely mad.
Ive found most often the mid level division arent truly set with this and sometimes take it in the wrong way. Just what i have noticed.
Last night in the final minutes we were up by alot of points and drove the whole feild abd found our selves on the goal line about to score. We were in our huddle as the ref approached us and asked us to down the ball as it was the right thing. So we did. The other team didnt seem bothered by it. And all was good when we talked after the game we had said if a team was to drive the feild and down it on the last play on the goal line we would have been insulted.
Teams in the past have downed the ball when the game is put of hand and theirs still time on the clock and both teams agreed too.
But ive also been on teams where its been asked if the other team wants to down it due to score and their insulted by the question.
I understand the class act of this question or act of downing. But can also understand the other side of it.
I am curious to find out what everyone else feels of this?
*This question only relays to indoor as it is a far more competitive game due to play off implications due to points for and against*

Well, anyone that has played with me knows that I don't really believe in downing the ball. Even if your up 50 points, nor would I expect someone to down the ball against us if we were losing by 50. Just play till the clock says zero. That might make me a bit of a jerk but I'm completety okay with that. If you drive the ball all the way to the redzone you might as well just finish off the drive

Playing touch isn't cheap, I say play it out.
I do agree with Damian81 though, if you're up by a considerable amount, test out your backup QB, let them throw, get some experience in case the starter gets hurt. Switch up your rusher even. Teams that win by 35+ often don't have issues with playoff tiebreakers, let the other team get some seasoning, if they score a TD or two, put the starters back in...

If the team who's losing wants to down the ball, I won't argue too hard about it with them, as a ref or a player. I've seen blowouts go bad in both directions; players who are losing deciding to start hitting, or players who are winning trying to make the other team look bad by running up the score even in the last minute. Letting the team who's losing decide helps mitigate this. And when I've been on the team who's getting killed, I'll down the ball so as not to further demoralise my team for the future, if the other guys want to.
If I'm reffing and I know the winning QB's a good guy, I might suggest switching up players if it's out of hand. Most guys will, some guys won't.
