Messages for Summer 2010 Outdoor Information

Comment Posted by jon Mar 08, 2010 06:07 AM

The PIT has had a very busy off season adding quality fields, refs, and a few surprises into its repertoire. We will be updating information over the next few weeks as to what we have in store for our 2nd season of outdoor.

For our first order of business, we have added a second southend location (in addition to our stable of fields from 2009). The field is located at Aldgate Park in St.Vital and can be viewed by clicking on "Field Locations" on the menu bar or here: http://www.pitfootball.com/locations

Many of our players requested more southend games and the PIT will be able to deliver. Aldgate Park is exclusive to the PIT league and is bracketed by Aldgate Road to the South, Winterhaven Drive to the North, Keelgate Place to the West and Kimberwell Bay to the East. Aldgate Park is a regulation sized football field with no goal posts, so refs and/or players will not be required to pick up or return pads to various locations throughout the city. Maple Grove continues to be the only location the PIT uses with goal posts (pads are located on site).

We are currently in discussions regarding a couple of other fields that ideally we will be able to reveal shortly.

I had a bit of time to check out our newest field today. Trust me, after the PIT crew works some magic this spring,(more details to follow soon) this may be the best field in the city. Great location, including a wind block from the surrounding development. Forgive the camera phone picture!

We didn't want to forget the teams who are from the North part of the city, so the PIT has secured its second new location for the 2010 season to accommodate those teams/players. The PIT has become the first league in the city to acquire fields in all 4 corners of the city.

South (2 fields) - Aldgate Park and Maple Grove
West - Little Mountain
East - Sherbo Cove
North - River Elm Field

Like Aldgate Park to the south, River Elm is a regulation sized football field with no goal posts, so refs and/or players will not be required to pick up or return pads to various locations throughout the city. River Elm Field is bracketed by Main Street to the West, the River to the East, the Perimeter to the North and River Elm Drive to the South. The field is located in West Kildonan and can be viewed by clicking on "Field Locations" on the menu bar or here: http://www.pitfootball.com/locations

Keep posted for further developments!

Once again I found myself needing to check out our newest addition to the PIT's stable of fields for the summer. Imagine green grass and the full compliment of lines that only the PIT provides for our membership. Check it out in our image gallery, or use this link.

The fields look great and will look better after a little TLC but I will not cut fields again if there is Old Milwakee involeved.

Sweet location!

Sorry Owen, Scott buys beer according to how good looking the girl is on the bottle/can.

Comment Posted by Damian Mar 15, 2010 07:32 AM

I just walked on the new field on Saturday. The field is crowned with a few low spots that can be filled in with a few yards of dirt.
Owen the grass doesn't need cutting.

Yes it is a pretty sweet find in the South end! And by the sounds of things we have made some people pretty envious! Keep posted, ideally we will have even more information regarding fields soon. It has been a highly successful offseason for the PIT, which will once again offer the best maintained fields in touch football today.

Stay posted for more field announancements, we are working on a couple of big things! But in the meantime we would like to announce our 2nd annual referee clinic. We pledge to use certified touch football refs for games in the PIT and are offering certificatons for head linesman and back judge positions for those interested in becoming referees.

Anyone interested in reffing for the summer season the in-class session will be offered the evening of Thursday May 6th and the practical on the afternoon of Sunday May 9th. We have our refs back from last year, and a bunch who are coming over from other leagues, but there is always room for additional refs as the PIT expands its summer session to accomodate the demand for full service touch football that only we can provide! Make some good coin while working on your tan over the summer.

For those who don't want to ref but would like to learn more about the rules of the game, we encourage you also to come out. The more informed you are about the game, the better the experience, and of course the better you will fare against your competition. Here is your chance to edge out the competition!

Here are some of the details:
In class session: TBA 6:30-9:30 Room 2L17 University of Winnipeg (refreshments served)
Practical (on field) session: TBA 1:00 University of Manitoba recreational fields
Instructors: Brad Kelm & Cliff Kitchen two of the most experienced refs in Manitoba - both with Tournament of Champions (touch football nationals) experience. They put on a great clinic last year for our new refs and we would expect the same this year.
Cost: Free

As long as you are registered on a team for the summer session and/or are interested in reffing there is no cost to attend. All that we ask is that you email Scott or myself to register. We will have some printing that we will have to make up prior to the clinic so we will need an idea of numbers/costs. For more information, give us a shout.

For the players, by the players

What kind of refreshments are being served????

To our valued membership. You may have received an email through RedZoneLeagues discussing registration for the 2010 outdoor season using the PIT tag line “best game experience”. This has led to confusion as to whether the PIT is the same league as others in the city. The short answer is no, and we are sending out this message to clarify and differentiate our outdoor season from the rest.

What’s new: (or should we say “a year of firsts”)
In 2009, the PIT filled a niche in the city becoming the first full-service touch football league (The PIT takes care of everything from field maintenance, to unlimited schedule requests, to filling out the game cards for you!). If you haven’t read our history page you can find it here: http://www.pitfootball.com/menu/the-history-book In 2010, the PIT became the first league in Manitoba to move touch football to a year round sport, and has grown to become the largest league in the province with an estimated 200 teams coming through the doors this year alone. Players can now follow their team(s) or individual stats as they progress up the ranks in the most competitive league in the city. Not to rest on our accomplishments, over the winter the PIT acquired multiple new fields to become the first league to have fields in all four corners of the city (with more potential field locations to come!) View our field locations here: http://www.pitfootball.com/locations The PIT guarantees the best maintained and professionally lined fields in touch football. Check out our image gallery page here for proof. http://www.pitfootball.com/albums

To ensure the PIT continues to offer the best fields in touch football to our membership, in 2010 we invested in a top of the line laser field liner, and this year we are purchasing our own industrial lawn tractor, field aerator, field leveller, accessories and trailer to ensure that the PIT’s playing surfaces are both the safest and the best in the province (dare we say Canada?!) If you have become accustomed to playing in tall grass, sand traps, irregular field dimensions, or unlined fields, ask yourself where are your league fees going?

The PIT will also once again offer a free referee clinic to our membership. The clinic will take place in late April/early May to both increase our pool of the best qualified referees and increase the knowledge of our players. If you are registered in the summer league you have access to the free rules clinic. Others can copy our tag lines but the “best game day experience” can only be found here in the PIT. Below you will find our summer 2009 registration information. We invite teams to sign up for outdoor summer touch football on the website at www.pitfootball.com

Early bird registration: Tuesday April 20th 7:00-10:00
League fees $1325 for 18 games & playoffs (taxes & insurance included)
Teams carrying over a $50 discount from the Spring will pay only $1275!
Location: Orbit Room Lounge 2077 Pembina Highway or prearranged early drop-off

Late registration: Tuesday May 4th 7:00-10:00
League fees $1350 for 18 games & playoffs (taxes & insurance included)
Location: Orbit Room Lounge 2077 Pembina Highway or prearranged early drop-off

Any word on Stadium games for the Finals?

Comment Posted by jon Mar 22, 2010 05:19 PM

Working on something cool, so probably not the stadium (but stranger things have happened!). Unfortunately there is the trade off of great fields for all 18 games plus playoffs, or a stadium game that only a few teams get to enjoy. We put down some big $$$ for the field maintenance equipment this year so that all of our teams play on the best fields around...this year and beyond.

We had a big surge in registration today, seems teams want to play on the best fields in the city. Check out the progress of registration here: http://www.pitfootball.com/divisions (select Summer Outdoor 2010 from the drop down menu). Any teams wanting to register please email or call myself or Scott, seems that teams do not have the capability to register on the website right now unless and administrator does it for them. We are currently working out the kinks with our website person.

Due to higher than expected demand for our outdoor season (check out the competition at http://www.pitfootball.com/divisions, and select "summer 2010 outdoor season"), your PIT crew has been very busy during our "week off". In addition, to getting our industrial lawn tractor, trailer and aerator for field maintenance (the only league that we know if in Canada that will look after its own field maintenance), we have gone out and acquired yet another field!

The PIT will now be using Frederick Heubach Park South for the 2010 season. Frederick Heubach Park is located in the South West part of the city not far from Assiniboine Park. Like our other new fields, Aldgate Park and River Elm to the North, Frederick Heubach Park is a regulation sized football field with no goal posts, so refs and/or players will not be required to pick up or return pads to various locations throughout the city. Frederick Heubach Park is located between Park Blvd West and Park Blvd East. The field can be viewed by clicking on "Field Locations" on the menu bar or here: http://www.pitfootball.com/locations

We hope to get up a few pictures shortly, but trust us this field is lush! Even more information on fields is still to come...

Summer is looking KILLER!!! I don't want to scare anyone, but we're nearly at 40 teams and may look at capping the Summer teams if registration continues at this explosive rate.

Its official, summer registration can now be completed by team captains. 42 teams and counting! The PIT may see a 100% growth rate for the 2010 season. What an amazing feat that would be to accomplish...goes to show that if you do things right, the teams will come!

Scott/Jon,

Do we have a rough idea of what the summer schedule will look like in terms of days of the week the games are on and the times? A couple of players are asking in order to determine summer availability etc. Thanks.

Comment Posted by jon Apr 18, 2010 06:40 AM

Hey Hoan,

The majority of the season will be Monday-Friday 6:00pm and 7:45pm games, Saturdays 9:00am to 5:00pm games, Sundays 9:00am to 7:00pm. Times will be adjusted to account for sunlight. You won't play long weekends, bomber home games, holidays, etc. You can book off any days using the schedule request form located under "Forms & Files" on the sidebar.

Hope that helps

Jon

The divisions are starting to shape up nicely. The PIT will align them according to skill level of course, but the two most logical thoughts would be to have the divisions in grouping of 10 teams so they can play each opponent twice (9 opponents X 2=18), or a grouping of 7 teams so teams could play each opponent 3 times (6x3=18).

Registration is this Tuesday. Does anyone favor one over the other?? Would it build quicker rivalries to play more often, or is the variety more desirable? Comment if you like. Neil, Korry, Marco, Nolan, Gus, Owen, Bret, others ??????

I like the 10 team div situation, but who would make playoffs, 1-8 or all 10?

Comment Posted by jon Apr 19, 2010 12:44 PM

All teams make playoffs Mr. Panda.

10 it is, bingo!

Comment Posted by scott Apr 19, 2010 02:23 PM

I like the 2 games vs 9 teams. In the 3 games vs 6 rival teams which is the other scenario, a regular season victor is a guarantee, as there are no ties in the PIT!!

i like the 10 teams. More variety but it will still build good rivalries.
