A record 70 teams participated in the Spring chasing the championship glory that would come from winning one of the 14 championship trophies in the Spring. The final weekend saw it all and featured close games, overtimes, huge upsets and record breaking performances! Short summaries of the championship games can be found below!
Elite Division: Horde defeat Polk High 33-29
Despite the score, this was a defensive battle with both teams locking down each other’s offenses and every yard gained was contested for the duration of the game. The difference was an interception and score by the Horde in the last minute of the first half which put the Horde ahead as the teams exchanged stops and scores in the second half. Polk High is yet again the bridesmaid as championship glory continues to evade them. A bittersweet victory for the Horde as the team disbands, but the team goes out Peyton Manning-style, with yet another championship trophy. The Horde finish second all time in the Elite division with six championship titles (to go along with four Division 1 titles) and as a team finish only behind the legendary Avengers who had a record ten Elite titles.
Division 1: The Knights defeat the Jeffery 37-33
The Knights definitely didn’t win the Division 1 title easily. They fought back to win their semi-final game in overtime after scoring on the last play of the game, and were down two touchdowns to the Jeffery in the second half of their championship game before scoring the winning touchdown with only seconds remaining. This team is too veteran to call the Cardiac Kids but they definitely deserved the victory this night after these two amazing come from behind victories. Kudos gentlemen, and a lessen to all teams, make sure you knock your opponents out when you have them on the ropes, lest they come back with a haymaker of their own!
Division 2: Beerhawks defeat Monstars 19-13
The Beerhawks go from worst to first. In the Winter season the Beerhawks failed to win a game going 0-5 in the process, in the spring their fortunes took a 180 turn as they go 5-0 in the regular season and cap a perfect season by defeating the Monstars in a very closely contested final battle. Keith Bourgeois led the way this season in a breakout campaign which saw him finish first in the division in TD passes and second in sacks as the Beerhawks finally get the monkey off their back and win their first PIT championship with Keith as QB. Here is an interview with Keith after he wins his first championship as a quarterback:
Division 3: Knighthawks defeat Agent Orange 26-20
The Knighthawks cap their undefeated season by defeating Agent Orange 26-14, the second straight championship for this group. The Hawks were led by the three interceptions and six points from Cody Hunter, while Steve Nabess did what Steve Nabess does as he hauled in two picks, scored a point and had two TD passes. However Steve’s heroics were not enough on this day as the Knighthawks go wire to wire in Division 3.
Division 4: Patalia Island defeat Picked Last in Gym Class 27-18
Patalia Island win their first ever championship in the PIT. It was a long road to victory but they won the divisional title in pretty epic fashion. Before knocking off the second seeded Picked Last team in the final they defeated the top-seeded Kings who were undefeated in over 20 straight indoor games, a PIT record that I believe will never be topped. The Kings had not lost a game in three straight seasons until the hit the Island. While the championship trophy is the real prize, this team probably pulled the biggest upset in the playoffs by knocking off the Kings and then taking the title as the fourth seed…that is perhaps until you read about the Division 10 championship!
Division 5: Gordan’s Goons defeat The Silverbacks 6-1
The Goons defeat the Backs in a defensive final game. We can’t blame the elements for this score as we had perfect conditions inside the fieldhouse and on the turf! Both teams turned up their defensive acumen with only Game MVP Jermaine Lumsden being able to cross the goal line. The six points was enough to win on this day, but if you think that final score was crazy low…wait until you read about the Division 10 championship!
Division 6: Snipers defeat Average Sized Giants 38-26
Snipers QB Roger Pachet suffers as mysterious biking (you sure it wasn’t boaking???) accident just prior to playoffs which ruled him out for the championship final. In steps Tryston Dyce for the Snipers who used a combination of big throws and quick feet to confound teams in both the semis and finals. The Average Sized Giants fought valiantly however as they iron manned two straight games and had the Snipers on the ropes at halftime, but game MVP Tryston Dyce was able to snatch victory from defeat. After the game information came out as to what really happened to the Snipers original QB:
Division 7: Free Agents: The Second Coming defeat Young Guns 33-12
The Free Agents win their second straight championship title with veteran holdovers Todd Hersak and Al Bloomfield having their names inscribed on both the Winter and Spring trophies. It was youth versus the veterans in this one, with veteran savvy winning out as Todd Hersak threw for five touchdowns to four different receivers to take home the Division 7 title. Marcello “U20 National Team member” Vaziri countered with two touchdowns of his own for the Young Guns. Nothing to tie this game into Division 10…but just wait until you read about the Division 10 championship!
Division 8: The Night Show defeat Fail Mary 33-28
Kory Stagg wins his third title with his third different team over the last two seasons, emphasizing how Kory has really come into his own as a reading quarterback. However, in this game Kory won it not only with his arm (throwing for five touchdowns) but also his defensive prowess. Mr. Stagg was forced into action as the Night Show iron manned two games Saturday evening after one of their players was sent off for objectionable conduct. First the Night Show defeated their arch nemesis and second seeded Bad Newz Kennels, and then knocked off the first seed, winning both high scoring games by less that a score. If you think this division had great parity…wait until you read about the Division 10 championship!
Division 9: Damn Yankees defeat Nothing but 6’s 40-19
Another fourth seed wins a championship as the Damn Yankees, who only got into the playoffs by wining a tiebreaker for the final spot, had their offense go off on this night! The Yankees were led by the two interceptions, three TD passes and 7 points from Lional Kress while the Garofalos had 13 points and two TD passes for the 6’s. Not a bad time for the Yankees to score the most points in a game in their team’s history! But if you think sneaking into the playoffs to win a championship is a crazy way to get a title…wait until you read about the Division 10 championship!
Division 10: TD Twisters defeat Suckskatchewan 2-0 (This is a real score!)
Let me paint you a picture: The TD twisters win only one game all season but find themselves embroiled in a three-way tie for the final playoff spot at 1-4 with a division worst plus/minus in the regular season. This team is done for right? After going through the tiebreakers they miraculously sneak into the playoffs by winning the plus/minus in games against their tied opponents! However, after winning the tiebreaker they must face an undefeated Brick Squad who scored nearly 100 more points then the next best team in the division, this team is done for right? Well the TD Twisters defense plays out of their mind, shutting out the Brick Squad and winning the semi-final, wait for it…3-0?!?! The TD Twisters scored a safety and a punt single, the first time a team in the PIT has won a game without scoring any offensive points. Now the TD Twisters had to play the third seeded Sucksatchewan for the championship, a team who beat the TD Twisters in their first matchup. This team is done for right? Well don’t tell the Twisters defense as they also promptly post another shut out…this time in overtime, as the game ended 0-0!?!?! The TD Twisters score two points in OT to win the championship. So to sum up their defense gives up a record low zero points in the playoffs, while their offense scores a record low two points in two games, including zero points in regulation! Mind bogglingly awesome! I am going to say that this record is going to be very difficult to defeat, if not mathematically impossible…here is the video of the last two minutes of the Twisters game…sonofabitch!
Coed Competitive Division: Flying Squirrels defeat the Assassins Legends 33-6
Yet another finals show down between these two teams with the Squirrels winning fall, Assassins Winter, this game would settle which coed team reigned supreme this past year. Usually these two teams combine for 100 points in scoring but the Squirrels rolled out a new defensive scheme which stymied and confounded the Legends offense. The Squirrels Cole Brydges was unstoppable on offense scoring 20 points and Katherine Huebner lead the Squirrels defense with multiple knockdowns including a couple deflections that were destined to be touchdowns. Teams should also now be very wary of Marc Steeves who positioned himself as a star in the league with a breakout performance of his own! The Squirrels saved their best performance for last to bookend their indoor coed titles.
Coed Recreational Division: Coed Free Agents defeat There’s No Crying in Baseball 37-25
A high scoring game for the coed recreational division as both teams decided not to play a lot of defense in this one (both teams should learn from the TD Twisters)! In true coed style both teams were led in scoring by the ladies with Mary Lee Lomibao scoring 12 for There’s No Crying and Cara Isaak scoring 13 for the Free Agents. The recreational coed division had five ladies in the top-ten scoring with four of them coming from these two teams, and out of the top ten scorers overall eight also came from these teams. Most likely this is the reason why points were being put on the board at a near record pace in one of the most exciting championship games of the Spring!
Masters Division: Staten Island Stapletons defeat Evansville Crimson Giants 26-13
Evansville led this game until just a few minutes remaining when Staten Island scored two quick touchdowns to win the Masters division. Staten Island was led by two interceptions and two touchdowns from Brett Thurston while Bryce McDonald countered with two of his own for the Giants. A somber final as Evansville player Rod Shwaykosky had a heart attack just days before the game. Evansville definitely could have used his defensive prowess in this one! Get will soon buddy! Both teams shared a few beers in the lounge after the game, a hallmark tradition that has become a staple of Masters division play.
Another great year of indoor wraps up in the PIT! Parity continues to reign as four fourth seeded teams win championships in the Spring, demonstrating that come playoffs its any given Sunday (or in our case any given Saturday Night). Congratulations to our 14 new champions who will have their names inscribed Stanley Cup Style on the nicest trophies in recreational sports. It is now time for teams to switch gears, hit the grass and play some football in the elements. Looking forward to a great season of summer ball! A big thanks to all the teams who played indoor this year, and for continuing the make the PIT the destination to play football in Manitoba and the largest touch football organization in Canada!
For the players, by the players!

Before leaving the game with his black eye swollen shut, Division 3 Final MVP Trevor Finch had a pick-six for Agent Orange that is not reflected on the score sheet. Final score should be 26-20. Kudos to the Knighthawks for a hard-fought victory. We still lost, but that 26-20 score looks better. :)
