The first ever U20 flag football games went down on the weekend and what games they were! The games were fast pace and kept our referees on their toes. The winners of league play will be sent to Halifax to represent Manitoba at the U20 national championships courtesy of Football Manitoba, the Winnipeg High School Division and PIT Football. Here is a brief rundown of the games on the weekend:
Grant Park Pirates defeat Finish First Football 19-12.
Two teams new to the sport faced off in a defensive battle. Grant Park jumped off to an early lead courtesy of Jared Boone's two touchdown passes to Cody Gushulak. Blade Thickfoot (who has the coolest name in the U20 league) chipped in a convert to give the Pirates the 7 point victory. Defensively the Pirates were led by the four sacks and three safeties from Amun Mayol. Finish First started very slowly but they made a game of it after Brendan Briden picked off a couple of second half passes, not to mention Daniel Belisle's acrobatic TD catch in double coverage!
Channel 4 News defeat Vincent Massey Trojans 27-26
This game came down to the wire with Channel 4 pulling the come from behind victory late in a game that Vincent Massey led for almost the entire duration. Andre (strongest arm in the PIT) Dueck led Vincent Massey with 4 touchdown passes, two to Liam Casey and one each to Kevin Gomez and Braden Saville. Defensively Barak Al Dabous and Braden Saville had interceptions while Abdul Gassama and Freddy Gomez terrorized the Channel 4 Qbs each registering at least a sack. Despite the strong defensive play from the Trojans, Channel 4 News won late when Kai Madsen hauled in an interception and then scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive. Kai had two interceptions and 19 points to lead Channel 4, while Drake Lesperance had a TD pass and six points while Austin Coutts threw for three himself.
A great start to the season with two very closely contested games. Should come down to the wire with no clear cut favorites to represent the Province at nationals!
