The championships are now in the books. Despite all of the rain and reschedules this year we had some great divisions, games, individual player performances and lastly some great championship games. Congratulations to our newest 14 champions who will have their names permanently inscribed into the PIT history book.
Elite: Horde defeat The Jeffery 34-32
Down 18 points with 15 minutes remaining in the game the Horde were left for dead. But like any good Zombie movie the dead arise when the living forget to ensure the undead are actually dead dead. The Jeffery couldn’t close and the Horde took full advantage scoring 20 unanswered points from receivers Mark Ridd, Jordan Fyvie and Cam Penner. The last four seasons of outdoor have crowned four different elite champions demonstrating the parity that now exists at the top. The Horde have a bright future ahead of them and other teams were put on notice after their stellar year…the first year elite team is also the youngest team in the top division. Next year I am sure teams will take more heed of the rules for stopping subsequent Horde invasions:
Division 1: Iced Earth defeat Doggs 1-0
Default? WTF?
Division 2: Polk High defeat Knights 25-20
The Knights outscored Polk High 20-0 in the first half and looked like they were in control as Polk High’s offense looked anemic. One halftime later and the roles were completely reversed as Polk High outscored the Knights 25-0 in the second. A tale of two games and another reminder how important it is to have that killer instinct to close games out. The game shouldn’t overshadow the great season by Knights QB Jim Bell who crushed the 2nd division TD pass record. Weird fact: Chris “diving interception” Krupa has now won the last three division two outdoor championships…with three different teams (Blazers, No D, Polk High). Which Div 2 team will sign this hired gun next year?
Division 3: Remember the Titans defeat Ballsagna 20-6
Ballsagna came into the game with the number one seed and looking for their second straight championship but left the game watching Remember the Titans hoist the championship trophy. Three interceptions from Phil Siemens, two from Drew Willms and one from Ziggy Haluik topped a great defensive performance. Defenses win championships…especially when the weather starts to turn!
Division 4: The Tribe defeat Snappers 16-15 (9 overtimes!)
These two teams were so evenly matched during the regular season (season series tied 1-1) it is fitting that this game was the closest championship of the day. The game came down to overtime converts to decide a victor, however this wasn’t your run of the mill overtime as the teams battled to a standstill until the Tribe finally broke the tie on the ninth overtime try! Definitely the game on the day and with that the Tribe take home a well-deserved second straight outdoor title.
Division 5: Football Junkies defeat Rampage 9-7
Lots of wind made this game less of a football game and more of a defensive standstill as neither team could mount much offense. In the windy conditions it looked like Football Junkies would have a distinct advantage with a running QB however Rampage rusher and game MVP David Shoup held the elusive Nick Trinder in check. While Nick couldn’t play his usual run and gun game, he could still kick and his two long punt singles were the difference maker.
Division 6: Warpigs defeat The Aints 26-6
The only top seeded team to win in the playoffs! The parity has been great this year, but Warpigs bucked the trend. Derek Mills threw four touchdown passes, two teach to Andrew Gregoire and Kyle Ashuk. The highest scoring team in the division kept it rolling but the defense also came up big. Only one sack and one interception but they were able to make stops when it counted to help bring home the trophy and keep the speedy receivers of the Aints in check.
Division 7: Touched by Angels defeat Vipers 32-7
Angels the first year outdoor team versus the Vipers veteran squad. Both teams had identical records going into the finals and both had 7 point wins versus each other. The Angels are the run and gun, the Vipers methodical. Two constrasting styles but like in almost all the other divisions the top seeded team went down to defeat. Garth “Hand of God” Irvine threw five touchdowns to five different receivers as the Vipers had no answer for the Angels spread offense.
Division 8: The Young and the Rest of Us defeat Anvils 9-0
Nine points total scored in a championship game? The offenses clearly didn’t muster much this game as the two teams combined for 6 interceptions and 9 sacks. The difference maker however was Aaron Glawson of Y&R who took down game MVP honours with his six sacks. Ivan Gibson also chipped in two interceptions and scored 66% of the games points with his first quarter TD! For those of you who like defensive football, this was your game! Congrats to Y&R for knocking off yet another top seed.
Division 9: Mediocre White Hype defeat North End Hawkeyes 15-8
Believe in the hype! With all the talk of the Cobras and Hawkeyes being too good for the division and how the league sucks, has no idea how to make divisions, and inexplicably hates Div 9, Mediocre White Hype held their tongue and put together one of the most impressive playoff runs in recent memory all while quieting the haters. Knocking off both of the second seeded Cobras and top seeded Hawkeyes the Hype proved that anything can happen once the whistle blows. Less talk, just go out and play to win the game.
Division 10: Free Agents defeat Too Old for This Sh*t 21-12
The Free Agents started strong, wained during the middle of the season then finished what they started knocking off a team that definitely wasn’t Too Old for This Sh*t. David Ernewein had three touchdown passes to John Perrata’s two which proved to be the difference in the highly entertaining game in one of the most highly entertaining divisions. Six of the seven teams in the division had at least eight wins on the season. It was anybody’s division to take and the Free Agents seized the opportunity.
Sacko: NFL Dynasty defeat Necessary Roughness 15-13
In a battle of who could move the ball against the wind better, NFL Dynasty chewed up a lot of clock in the third quarter while facing the wind then took it home in the fourth scoring 8 points with the gusting wind at their back. Six of those points came from the arm of Marty Bender and the two rouges from his foot proved to be the difference. Pretty sure the weather conditions for this game were something like this:
Flag Division 1: Doggs defeat Blitzkrieg 42-20
The Doggs avenge their championship game loss in 2013 and only loss of the 2014 season, defeating Blitzkrieg in the final. Blitzkrieg played valiantly considering their quarterback was not in town for playoffs! Unfortunately the Doggs proved too much for Blitzkrieg’s rookie QB, as the Doggs defensive line was relentless couting four sacks and providing consistent pressure from the front three. Offensively Mike Nelson threw for six TD passes and the Janzen brothers accounted for 24 points in the game.
Flag Division 2: Sports defeat Crimson Tide 32-8
Sports rang up all 32 points in the first half of the final shellshocking the 2013 Div 2 flag champions. There would be no repeat for the Crimson Tide, who did put it together in the second half and were the better team over the last two quarters. Unfortunately the first half was their undoing as Game MVP Luke Kennard threw four touchdown passes, two to his brother Jake and also accounted for about 300 yards running in this game! The run and gun style worked to perfection as the defensive line for Crimson Tide couldn’t keep Luke in the pocket.
See everyone in the Fall!
