Masters: Decatur Staleys defeat Hammond Pros 27-26 (overtime)
In only our second season of Master’s football it is already evident that the parity among teams in very good and that everyone seems to be having a lot of fun. It looked like the parity part was thrown out the window this Spring as the Hammond Pros went 5-0 during the regular season however they were upset by the Decatur Staleys 27-26 in overtime and in what might have been the game of the night. Rick Morand led the way for the Staleys with 18 points and two interceptions while Brett Thurston scored two converts to seal the win. We hope that Masters makes a triumphant return next Fall in indoor.
Coed: Spring Fling defeat Flying Squirrels 39-9
The parity wasn’t as great in coed as Spring Fling ran roughshod through the division leading in points for and against and winning both the semis and the finals handily. In the final Spring Fling was led by the 20 points and interception haul from Ezra Krahn. Ezra was pretty unstoppable come Spring and will make a nice addition to the elite division Iced Earth team and add another elite player to the Titans in Division 2 making them the team to beat come summer!
Elite: The Jeffery defeat the Horde 38-37
In another barnburner of a game the Horde were edged by the Jeffery via Hail Mary with only seconds left. The Jeffery's prayer was answered when Jeff Draper hauled in a catch over the Horde defense. Ev Jackson also had a huge game for the Jeffery with 25 points. Cam “youngest player in elite” Penner replied with 18 points for the Horde. Another memorable game in the top division and makes those games so much fun to play and watch.
Division 1: Guild of Calamitous Intent defeat Polk High 34-21
Another very good top division final as the Guild managed to battle back from an early deficit to claim victory in a game that was closer than the score indicated. Polk High jumped out to an early 21-8 lead but the Guild scored 26 unanswered, 18 from three Harlo Larkin touchdown receptions. With the victory the Guild captured their record 13th divisional championship however with no outdoor team for the first time in PIT history perhaps this might be the swan song for this legendary powerhouse team.
Division 2: Flakey BandAids United defeat U Can’t Touch This 40-24
If you are going to win one game you might as well make it the championship final! After going 0-5 during the regular season the Flakes put everything together in the final putting on an offensive display. UCCT had both Pierre Feng and Stephan Pastushenko in double digit scoring but it was not enough. Chad “Asian Deion” Okumura traded in his cornerback gloves for the quarterback spot throwing five touchdowns, three to Christian Hansen and one each to Rhys Hansen, Nick Giesbrecht and Brett Anderson.
Division 3: Slobberknockers defeat USO 15-12 (overtime)
Unlike some of the previous battles this game was a defensive slobberknocker that was tied at just 12 at the end of regulation! The Slobberknockers scored on all three of their overtime attempts (1 from Neil Smalley and 2 from Dave Deleurme) and held USO off the score sheet in extra time for a hard earned Div 3 championship. Both teams felt that Division 3 was a bit of a stretch to start the indoor season but both proved they were not only in the correct division but were the two top teams. These two young teams will continue to move up the divisional ladder. Congrats.
Division 4: Monstars defeat The Blouses 55-22
The Monstars had an offensive explosion as Matt Nickel threw 7 touchdown passes with Andrew Gregorie scoring 24 points, Brett “Winnipeg Blue Bomber” Carter hauling in 17, and Kenny “I owe default money” Ferguson with 12 of his own. RJ “New Winnipeg Blue Bomber??” Cornish threw for 2 touchdowns and ran another in. This game probably featured the two most athletic teams in touch football and a couple of current and future CFLers!
Division 5: Not Too Sure defeat Nomads 33-26
Not Too Sure avenged their only defeat of the spring season as game MVP Joel North caught three of Mike White’s five touchdown passes. In the back and forth battle Glen “Oldest Player in Indoor” Dyck threw four touchdown passes, two each to Steven Trinder and Shane Smedvik. However Not Too Sure was too much on this day, watch for the highlights captured by Dayton “Go Pro” White!
Division 6: Great White Hype defeat Turn Down for What 39-15
Great White Hype wins their second straight championship in large part to huge games by Al Desaulniers (1 INT, 5 TD passes), Glendale Sabatin (5 sacks), and Chris Skitteral (19 points, 1 INT). “Chief” Ryan Scott tried to keep things interesting posting 2 sacks, 2 TD passes and an interception for Turn Down for What? however the Hype proved they were the real deal on this day.
Division 7: Venum defeat Sloppy Secondary 25-18
What do Chuck Norris All-Star Squadron, Dr. Rockso’s Three Ring Circus, Dr. Debacle, and Bad Company all have in common? They are all previous incarnations of Venum who lost championship games in every conceivable, heartbreaking, gut punching, flabbergasting way. The drought is over as one of the PIT’s original teams who play four seasons of football finally, finally break through and have their names engraved on the trophy. After being blue balled for so many years I think most of the guys on the team were walking around the lounge after the game doing this in celebration:
Division 8: Ninjas in Paris defeat Vikings 27-25
The Vikings attempted to storm Paris but with the help of some ninjas the French finally won a battle. Evan Weins threw four touchdown passes, two to Nathan Weins. Andrew George replied with four touchdown passes of his own, two to Levi Kasdof. These two ancient warriors are definitely close in skill and only Deadliest Warrior and the PIT can find any chinks in their armor.
Division 9: Ninja Turtles defeat Fort Rouge River Rats 18-7
The turtles take down Splinter in the biggest stunner since Megan Fox was cast as April O’Neil in the new TMNT movie. Jason “Michelangelo” Gill threw three TD passes, one each to Manveer “Leonardo” Deol, Inderveer “Donatello” Deol, and Sandeep “Raphael” Gill. Nolan Jackson had three sacks and a TD pass for the Rats but just like Shredder in the end they just couldn't make turtle soup.
Division 10: Unicorn Football Club defeat Danger Zone 26-6
The Unicorns were relentless on defense with four interceptions and the offense also rolled as MVP Sukhmen Brar threw four touchdown passes to three different receivers. Dangerous Mike McCheyne was held in check for Danger Zone and not even an affiliation with the greatest secret agent of all time could save them on this day.
Division 11: Herniated Goat Scrotes defeat Sherotta 13-6
Herniated Goats are another long running team who ended a championship drought on this night. Game MVP Kory “Red” Stagg threw two touchdown passes and ran in a convert while the defense held Sukhman Brar’s Sherotta team in check. The Goats started the season 0-3 and had to win out to get their names engraved on the trophy and this battle tested team did just that in a remarkable turnaround of a season.
Division 12: JTG Alum defeat 1 in the Pocket 2 in the Endzone 34-12
JTG Alum fired on all cylinders with some big time performances. Riley Douglas had 8 points, 1 sack, and 1 pick, while Brett Jewell had 18 points and 2 INTs, and not to be outdone Derrick McIntyre had 7 points, an interception and a touchdown pass. This onslaught was too much for the 1 in the pocket despite big games from each of Eric Jorgenson (2 touchdowns), Ian Morris (2 sacks), and Jesse Schmidt (2 TD passes)
Division 13: Gerry Gordan’s Mazda defeat Cobras 15-7
Gerry Gordan should be proud of his Mazda aficionados as these rookies take their first championship with some great defense courtesy of Colton “4 sacks” Lemieux and interceptions by Jordan Lee and Michael Jaikaran. The always tough Cobras put up a great fight but after seeing this commercial from Gerry Gordan then just wanted to ride out into the sunset in a Mazda Miata. (PS you need better commercials Gerry Gordan!)
Congratulations to our record 16 Spring Divisional Winners! Fall Indoor is now just 5 short months away!
