Three overtime games and 14 of the 18 championship games ending with scores within a converted touchdown ended a great weekend of games and a season that demonstrated the talent level and parity of the league. The winter season will have a lot to live up to! Here is a brief rundown of each of the championship games.

Elite – Doggs defeat Avengers 35-28
The Doggs prove they are for real by winning their second consecutive elite championship on the back of Darryl Janzen’s multiple touchdown MVP performance. Despite some clock troubles at the end of this one another great elite division game in the books.

Division 1 - Guild of Calamitous Intent defeat Iced Earth 30-26
The Guild wrestles the Div 1 trophy back from Iced Earth in a back-and-forth thriller in which Iced Earth turncoat Neil McKernan scores the winning “toe-tapping back of the endzone” touchdown with only 15 seconds left in the game. Iced Earth scored to go ahead with 1:10 remaining on a great pass from Mike Brownridge to Chris Krupa but with no timeouts the Guild were surgical in their precision to go the length of the field in under a minute for victory. The sprint right option was called and here was the result:

Division 2 – Dream Team defeat Anachronism 27-26 (overtime)
In the game of the night Dream Team channels their misplaced hate to defeat Anachronism in overtime courtesy of Jeff Drapers 13 points. After running roughshod through the division and defeating some Division 1 teams along the way it’s time for these guys to move up divs and play with the big boys come winter. To help them in the cause they should enlist help from the greatest dream team player on the ’92 team:

Division 3 – The Furry Wall defeat LW United 47-6
LW United, perhaps the PITs best young up and coming team, ran head first into the Furry Wall demonstrating that size and speed alone won’t bring home a championship. Dave Robson’s seven touchdown passes to six different receivers mark the Furry Wall as another team moving up divisions come winter. Keep an eye on LW United, these guys will be scary once they get some more experience at the touch game.

Division 4 – What’s Old is New defeat Slobberknockers 32-31 (overtime)
The second overtime of the night had Roy DuQuette end the Slobberknockers quest for championship glory catching the winning convert from Eli Vieira. While there will be no joy in Slobbie-ville this Christmas, the Paul Frias household will be celebrating his first championship after a half dozen consecutive championship game losses. I am sure Paul is still wearing that PIT championship shirt!

Division 5 – Moss Hand defeat You Can’t Coach That 12-7
In what was expected to be a high scoring affair turned out to be a defensive battle. JJ Mikolash and Jesse Clarke combined for 46 touchdown passes but could only must three this day. Pierre Feng comes up big for Moss Hand with two interceptions and a touchdown to lead his team to victory.

Division 6 – Angelic Assassins defeat Snipers 39-27
Off the heels of the Snipers semi-final victory via Hail Mary, their final prayers were left unanswered as the Angelic Assassins pour in 39 points. JJ Mikolash threw six TD passes and Patrick Young scored 12 including a pick six to help seal the Assassins victory. The veteran laden Snipers team will surely shake this one off and once again be a force come winter.

Division 7 – The Filthy Few defeat Venum 31-28
Another year another heartbreaking finals Venum loss. The Filthy Few trumps Dino Lisi’s 20 points by scoring the winning touchdown on the last play of the game. QB Josh Pereira evaded the rush long enough to find Liam Taylor in the back of the end zone to cap the comeback of the night. Venum remains eternally snake bitten.

Division 8 – Da Beers defeat Exploding Katchalus 24-19
Da Beers were bridesmaids in the summer but take home the big one in the fall with a five point victory over the potatoes. These two up-and-coming teams are young, fast, will be playing in the upper echelons of the league shortly. Reid Buchanan of Da Beers fame had four touchdown passes, two to Eric Egan while Alex Hebert replied for the potatoes with two TD passes, a sack and six points.

Division 9 – Appetite for TDs defeat Deep Punts 37-12
Deep Punts were heavy favorites going into this one due in no small part to their undefeated season however this is the reason why we play the championship games. Matthew Berens, Tony Carvalho, and Travis Maybin each had two touchdown receptions from Nathan Berens who also contributed a pick and a convert. Total team effort from Appetite for TDs in this game!

Division 10 – The Super Friends defeat Beast Mode 25-19
Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice The Super Friends vanquish the Legion of Doom that is Beast Mode. Alvin “Aquaman” Ramharakh throws three TD passes, two to Giovanni “The Flash” Masi in the Super Friends intergalactic victory. Gathered together from the cosmic reaches of the universe these guys may be the most powerful force of good ever assembled.

Division 11 – Cole World defeat VG Unit 36-35
Another great game in the PIT as Cole World led by all-world QB Nick Trinder edges a tough VG Unit by a single point. Nick threw for three TDs and used his elusiveness to run in another. Replying for VG Unit was Inderveer Deol who scored 21 points and had two sacks in an MVP performance in the losing effort.

Division 12 – Deadliest Catch defeat Gangnam Style 27-20
Gangnam Style was the highest scoring team in the fall session but couldn’t must enough points to defeat the Deadliest Catch. Ryan Ferland ends his championship drought by throwing four touchdowns, two to Randy Munson. Darrin Lavalee, Chris Silva, and Ian Bowie round out the scoring for the champs.

Division 13 – Spetnaz defeat Maclin on Your Girl 31-24
The elite fighting force that is Spetnaz overwhelmed Maclin on Your Girl on the strength of Reid Buchanan’s five touchdown passes and Jason Cassie’s two touchdown receptions. Maclin’s first appearance in the PIT was a successful one but they couldn’t stop the onslaught as Spetnaz inscribes their name on the championship trophy for a second time.

Division 14 – RAY-vens defeat Mayhem 1-0 (overtime)
Maybe it was playing two games in the same night but something mystical came together with the RAY-vens winning a championship and setting a PIT record that can never be beaten! That score is not a mistaken nor is it a default!!!! Brock Wittevrongel scored the overtime winner in the lowest scoring game in PIT championship history. Congratulations on your championship and your infamy! Here is the highlight of that score:

Division 15 – Untouchables defeat Pylons 25-18
In another close battle Paul Grestoni’s two picks and two touchdowns were too much for the Pylons to overcome. Aaron Lefort was the games MVP picking off three errant passes and scoring a touchdown in the losing effort. Scott Dryden was lights out for the Pylons amassing a QB rating of 158.3 to go along with his four touchdown passes.

Division 16 – We are Marshall’s Wife defeat Section Slosh 26-6
Roanna Cox leads We are Marshall’s Wife to a convincing victory over Section Slosh. Proving that the ladies can compete with the men Rox not only led the division in TD passes but also set the divisional record with 19 for the season. For those of you not in the know Rox quarterbacks the Manitoba Fearless tackle team in the summer and will be trying out for the national team later this year. Here is some video for you to marvel at:

Division 17 – The Usual Suspects defeat TD Twisters 38-12
Led by another tackle quarterback Nathan Miser put his JV skills on display dismantling the previously undefeated TD twisters. Nathan who is only fifteen years old threw five touchdown passes three to his uncle Dave (what no love for your Dad???). If Nathan keeps playing the game we might see a future elite QB on our hands in ten years’ time! Congrats to both teams who also had to run the gauntlet by playing their semi-final game previously in the night.

Congratulations to each of the teams who took home one of the 18 trophies handed out in the Fall. Each player on the championship teams will have their names engraved “Stanley Cup” style on each of the trophies, forever immortalizing their accomplishments in PIT lore!
