Football Manitoba/PIT Football u18 Flag Football League



The Football Manitoba u18 flag football league was founded in 2014 as a Spring league that would run prior to the tackle football season in the Province. The league helped create a new pathway to play noncontact football and get more u18 players into the sport. Since the inaugural season, the u18 flag league has grown from a couple of dozen teams to more than 200 teams and more than 2000 participants. The incredible growth of the sport in Manitoba has contributed to Manitoba's powerhouse reputation at the National level. Manitoba has won five national u18 flag football championships. In 2023, Team Manitoba chosen as the first u18 team to represent Canada on the international stage at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Tournament of the Americas. Team Manitoba accounted well for themselves, ultimately finishing in fourth place against true Nationally selected teams from across the world.

In 2018, PIT Football partnered with Football Manitoba to offer the first indoor flag football league in the Province's history. Hosted by the University of Winnipeg Recplex, 29 teams participated in the first year with age groupings ranging from u10 to u18. In just a few short years, the indoor flag league has grown to nearly 100 teams. The success of the league allowed the indoor component of the flag football season to be split into Fall and Winter seasons.

With professional flag football leagues proliferating and the possibility of flag football entering Olympic competition, it is no wonder that flag football is the fastest growing sport in North America. Will flag football eventually supplant touch football as the go to non-contact sport in Manitoba? Time will tell.
