HISTORY OF TOUCH FOOTBALL IN MANITOBA

FOR THE PLAYERS ...           ... BY THE PLAYERS

WCTFL/WTFL: Winnipeg Centennial/Winnipeg Touch Football League/Women's Touch Football League

The Winnipeg (Centennial) Touch Football League, has a proud history - founded in 1974 by former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Don Jonas. The league began as a nine-a-side game in 1972, transitioning to the seven-person outdoor game as we know it in 1977. The Winnipeg Assassins were the pinnacle of the league for most of its modern existence winning a record 21 outdoor championships. In 2006, the WTFL hosted the National Touch Football Championships at Maple Grove Rugby Park, where at the time, the Assassins finished second in Canada, the best finish for any Manitoba team until the Avengers won the Touch Football National Championship five years later in 2011.

In addition to the Assassins, it was truly a murderous' row of teams that competed in the elite division. The Eagles/Knights, Combines, Ratz, Avengers, Banditos, Heat, and Sunparties were just some of the teams that contended in what was probably the zenith of elite touch football in the province. Every game was incredibly competitive and players from throughout the league would gather to watch the Division 1 teams do battle.

The WTFL was the first league to begin to track statistics, adding another layer to the best game day experience we enjoy today. Player points were recorded as far back as 1975, interceptions and sack statistics were introduced in 1986, and then finally quarterbacks got their due beginning in 2003.

The WTFL was also where women's touch football began and excelled in Manitoba. In the 1980s, The WASPs won five consecutive women's championships. In 1986, the WASPs finished fifth in Canada, the best a female team from Manitoba has ever placed at Nationals. Two decades later The Winnipeg Chargers/Victorious Secret won six championships and also performed well at the National level. In 2011, the WTFL was renamed the Women's Touch Football League and catered exclusively to women's teams up until the leagues final season in the summer of 2017. All told, the WTFL ran for 45 years and holds the distinction of being the longest running touch football league in Manitoba history (1972-2017).

MFL: Mazur's Indoor Touch Football League

The MFL, or Mazur League as it was often called, was founded by Darrell Mazur in 1996. Darrell was the mastermind behind the creation of indoor touch football in Manitoba. Based on available historical records the MFL was the first indoor league in Canada! From 1996 to 2002 the MFL games were played out of the Golf Dome. A tournament would kickoff the first ever indoor games in the MFL. The Nomads, led by Hall of Fame QB Glen Dyck, captured the first ever Indoor championship ousting some of the top teams in the Province. The success of the tournament ultimately led to the creation of league play and the indoor season as we know it. For those willing to brave the dreaded old school "Astroturf burns", The MFL gave football junkies a chance to get their football fix in over the winter months. In 2002, the MFL moved its games to the Gateway Recreational Center, which converted an indoor hockey rink into a soccer/football field. Those courageous enough to play through the hazards of boards (you could catch a ball against the boards as long as you had one foot on the ground) were treated to some awesome, albeit very late, evenings of Winter football. It was the same year that there was enough teams playing indoor football that the league could be now be split into two seasons, a Fall league and a Winter league!

In 2005, the league returned to the Golf Dome where "newer style" artificial turf eliminated the dreaded rug-burns of the astroturf. No boards meant that out-patterns and corners could be run without risk of life-ending injury! The renovated Golf Dome was a renaissance at the time. New fields brought with it record registration. The league grew year after year, culminating in a then record 56 teams for the Winter 2008 season. The Golf Dome remained the home to the MFL right up until the final season in 2013.

There were some great rivalries in the league, especially between the Avengers and Assassins. The new guard (at the time) battled the old guard in some incredible championship game. In addition to being the first indoor league of its kind, the MFL was also the first to offer coed football and the first indoor league to offer women's football. You could say that the Mazur League was quite ahead of its time. A lot of firsts for the MFL, and for those that played, a lot of great memories. The MFL has the distinction of being the longest running indoor league in Manitoba history, spanning 17 years (1996-2013).

UTFL: Ultimate Touch Football League

The Ultimate Touch Football League (UTFL) was formed in 1998 by Jerry Hildebrant as direct competition with the "Big 2" at the time, the WTFL and CANFORD. What started with just eight teams, eventually blossemed into the largest touch football league in Manitoba for the years 2007 through 2010. By this time the league was run by Touch Football Hall of Fame Contributor Mike Hamulka. Located primarily in the Eastern part of Winnipeg, the league grew dramatically due to the introduction of the "multi-player" rule in 2002. Prior to that, players were only allowed to play on one team in a league. The change in rules and subsequent dramatic growth of the UTFL forced all the other leagues at the time to change their rules to allow playing on multiple teams. Love or hate the rule, being able to play on more than one team created an explosion of touch football in Manitoba. The rule allowed players to get "multiple seasons" of play in each year and increased the skill level of players exponentially. Soon the trickle-down effect of players playing in multiple divisions meant that no matter what division you played, you probably had someone that could help mimic the sophisticated offenses and defenses played in the top divisions. The multi-player rule would be the most important contribution the UTFL had on touch football in the province.

The UTFL also was the first league to create MVP awards. In the case of the UTFL, each division had a MVP which was voted on by the league executive. The PIT based its MVP winner and belt on this UTFL idea, instead allowing the players to vote for the league MVP.

The UTFL was ruled by 6 Gun Justice in its early years. 6 Gun Justice was the precusor to the elite division Banditos team in the WTFL and had a run of seven straight division 1 finals. The UTFL was also the birthplace of the Avengers, the only Manitoba team to win the National Touch Football National Championship. The Assassins, Knights, Doggs, and many other top division teams also played for a time in the UTFL when the league was at its peak.

In 2012, Mike Hamulka sold the league, and while by then the PIT Football league had become the largest league in the city, the UTFL still had a devoted following. However, the sale of the league went sideways as the UTFL went bankrupt midseason. The league was renamed the Prairie Touch Football League as a consortium of players tried to keep the league running under a new brand. The season was cut short but playoffs were run and the final champions of the UTFL/Prairie Touch Football League were crowned. Unfortunately many teams were turned off by what had happened and the league simply could not earn back the trust of players for the 2013 season and had to disband. Ultimately, the UTFL lasted a tumultuous 14 years, but there is no denying the effect the league had on Football in Manitoba. In fact, if you check the UTFL champions and player statistics pages below, you will still see a lot of familiar faces and teams still playing in the PIT Football League!
